My cousin and I drove from Kentucky to visit and we were not disappointed. I had the chicken wings with yams, mac n cheese and fried corn. Everything was cooked to perfection. Our waitress took such great care of us. There was a line but we were able to get in and out in a hour.

I was in STL for a conference and everyone I knew kept saying how we have to go to Sweetie Pies. Now I don't watch the show, so I don't really care whether or not I go to this place. I've been burned too many times by restaurants that have appeared on television food travels shows etc. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. I had a very good meal. I tried the chicken wings, ox tails, mac & cheese, sweet potatoes, and peach cobbler. I liked the ox tail, but I thought they would come with gravy. The mac & cheese was on point and I could have eaten just that and been happy. The sweet potatoes were good and I loved the peach cobbler. I saved the chicken wings for a late night snack. Overall I'd say I was satisfied, my only complaint is that I thought it was a little pricey. The staff was very friendly and the customer service was top notch. If I'm in The Lou again I would stop by Sweetie Pies again.

Why, Robbie, Why?! Just to preface this review, I am a huge fan of Sweetie Pie's. As proof, here is my prior review of the one in The Grove: yelp.com/biz/sweetie-pie… This weekend I celebrated my birthday, so I did some of my favorite things. One of these things was eat at Sweetie Pie's. However, knowing that it was Sunday and that The Grove location would be undoubtedly overflowing with people, I made an audible and tried the Upper Crust location. The reviews were light and average, so I figured that the wait wouldn't be nearly as long. I was wrong. We arrived at about noon, and the line was pouring out the door. Apparently, the Kansas chapter of the NAACP made a special stop at Upper Crust that morning. This is not a joke. There were literally fifty or more people in yellow Kansas NAACP shirts sitting and eating as we finally made our way into the building. If this didn't happen, perhaps our wait would have been cut into half. However, the time in line was nearly an hour. As we made to the front, I noticed that the chicken wings were slightly off. Someone brought a fresh batch before I ordered, and I could tell that they were pretty skimpy. Not taking a chance on another course, I went with my gut and ordered the staple. Finally, we were seated. I dug into my mac 'n' cheese, the highlight of the meal. They basically gave me a dollop of mashed potatoes, but the grand disappointment was the chicken. When I bit into that first wing, I could find no meat. Each wing followed with the same issue: little to no meat. At first, I thought maybe they had overcooked the chicken, but I'm not sure that was the problem. I finished my meal, but with no great joy. This has never happened at The Grove location. I just hope that it was a bad day at Upper Crust and that they were overwhelmed by the large group of people visiting on top of the normal lunch rush. However, I don't know if I'll take another chance on Upper Crust when Man Grove is still batting 1.000.

The food was excellent and the staff was very courtesy. I would visit this location again.

We arrived at around 11:45 this morning and appeared to have beaten the crowd that we experienced a couple of years ago at the Mangrove location. The crowd never really showed up but the service was still VERY slow because they could not keep enough chicken wings cooked. We had to wait for 2 batches of wings to be cooked before being served but once we received the food it was all good. One thing I noticed that I didn't like was the first server you encountered was eating food off the line which was not sanitary or healthy for customers. From my table I could see her taking pieces of fish eating them ... this happened more than once. She was obviously trying to hide it but not very well. I don't think the management would allow this behavior but it happened anyway ... she also gave some food to the girl who was learning the register when she came to socialize during some down time

Was in St. Louis for work and definitely had to try this place. Went for lunch, but line was out the door so we came back for dinner. Ordered the catfish with cabbage, green beans and macaroni and cheese. The catfish was amazing and fresh, the best catfish I have ever tasted. The sides were a different story, the cabbage was good and the green beans were ok, but I did not care for the mac and cheese at all. Did not even taste like any mac and cheese I have ever had before. The cornbread was good and the wait staff was excellent. We had a guy named Andre and he was super friendly and did an excellent job. Would definitely try again, just with different items. Would like to have had an option for some type of greens. I'm far from a soul food expert, but that seems like it should be a mainstay on the menu. Try if your I town, definitely worth a shot.

If you are in the Midwest, St. Louis to be exact, you HAVE to stop thru Sweetie Pie's. I watched many of the episodes on television and the line is always outside the building. We wanted to go to a location that was spacious so we went with the Upper crust location and that was the best decision. No line outside, however, the line moves kinda slow. We waited in line at the least 20 minutes which is a long wait especially when the anticipation is high. I was shocked that the camera crew was not there b/c that's part of the overall experience but at the same time I was glad they wasn't. I wanted to eat comfortably and not feel pressured to be on camera or eat cute. I didn't eat cute at all, in fact, I was getting down! The food was worth the wait and delicious, I'm not going to say its the best soul food I had b/c it's not but it definitely beats Augusta's soul food restaurants (come on Augusta let's step our game up). The prices are a bit steep, I paid $11+ tax for my meat, 2 sides, and a roll which is a little pricey but I forgot I wasn't in the South. The customer service is...OK...maybe b/c they are trying to get people in and out so don't expect that warm, southern hospitality. Did I see any famous faces? I saw one of Miss Robbie's sisters and I also saw her grandson who is a server(Miss Robbie's deceased son's child). Overall I enjoyed myself and the food I ordered, can't wait to for back and try their other dishes.

I've been dying to get to Sweetie Pie, so I finally got there. I was very excited to visit the restaurant and share a new experience with my family. On another note, being from the south, I know what good food is and what it takes to prepare good food. However, the food was not all that great. It was not seasoned at all. I had fried chicken, rice with liver gravy and green beans (which were ok). Maybe I was expecting too much. We went a little after 2 p.m., so they had ample enough time to season and prepare the food. They had even ran out of sweet tea. Not a good experience at all! I still will support them and watch the show because I love Ms. Robbie, but I probably won't eat there again. Oh, I did get a chance to see Charles, but he was too busy to stop and say hi.

I brought my mom from Las Vegas to enjoy Sweetie Pies. The staff was GREAT . I enjoyed the food I didn't lime the cat fish and the peach cobble was ok. Overall the trip was worth it will be back. Wanted to meet Ms. Robbie but next time. Thumbs up.

Was in St. Louis for a bowling tournament and everyone voted to go to Sweetie Pie's for late lunch. While I'm not a foodie, I may not be the best review to judge. However, I'm DC livin' but NC southern so the food was just aight to me. I found it nothing to write home about. I've had just as good if not much better at home. Yes, the line is long but they kept it moving. The tea...terrible. Definitely not NC sweet tea and there seemed to be some type of spice in it that just didn't do it for me. The DC crew that I was with all had complaints about the food being too sweet as if sugar had been added to all dishes. So out of say approximately 15 people, only 3 had no complaints - and I was one of the three. Again, as I'm not a foodie, I probably don't count much. The Mangrove location seems to be a better choice according to some others who ate there and they even had a live band but heard the line was much longer, as if THAT could have been possible.

  • Mal M.

Miss Sweetie Pie was here the day that we came..! She is so friendly and walked by taking pictures with those of us in line.. We only had a 25 minute wait .. Line moved quickly, however the older security guard who says he's a "pastor" was a bit of a jerk. Long story short, food was good.. And that peach tea is the truth!!!! We will be back again!

I've never been a fan of cafeteria style, and I'm still not, but a friend came into town desperately wanting to try this place from the tv show on OWN. I obliged. Real foodies know that this place is grease- and salt-stricken to the core, and nothing looks even remotely appealing as you walk to choose what you want. Upper Crust seemed like it may have had a more upscale feel to its predecessors (the Mangrove and North County) but it just felt like we were at a large, clean diner. A little unpolished I might add. And that's not referring to the food. But anyways, he ordered the pork steaks with gravy and cabbage and macaroni & cheese. I ordered the catfish fillets with green beans and macaroni & cheese. The macaroni was way too overcooked, much like everything else. It was too soft and mushy, cheese was clumpy. Made it very undesirable after a bite or two. The green beans were also overcooked and oily - if there are more seeds than shell, you my friend have cooked your beans too long. Now my catfish was fried way too hard. Wasn't very flavorful - more salty than anything. And to top it off, there was a large, thick piece of hair fried right into the batter of one of my fillets. *gag* And because you pay before you eat, the only restitution was a half-ass apology. Smh. My friend on the other hand seemed to enjoy his meal. He wasn't too happy about the hair, but overall I assume he had a ball - but he also enjoys dirty, hole-in-the-wall Chinese food "restaurants" with grade B ratings. *shrugs* Nonetheless, the Sweetie Pies hype is severely overrated and it needs to be stopped immediately.

Went in around 1:30, short lines and quick moving. Attitudes could've been a little warmer in the serving line but they weren't rude though, so...eh. Food was pretty good but definitely not the best soul food ever. Highlights were the mac n cheese and the cobbler. Also had fried chicken wings, potatoes, greens, and cornbread but those were good, not great. Would eat again and would tell folks passing through the Lou to check it out.

One of the best experiences I've had eating at a reparable restaurant. I was on vacation and was visiting family for a wedding down in Macomb IL. Yeah that's another story. So we were about 2.5 hours away from STL, and I'm like what can we do and where should we eat? Boom! I'm like let's eat at Sweetie Pie's. My mother, sister and I actually ate at Ms. Robbie restaurant in Delmar. Which attracts more of the tourist, which is fine. So I was hoping the food didn't lack quality in taste because more people frequent that particular restaurant. Any who, the food was fresh, hot and flavorful. Nothing was over cooked and under seasoned. I loved every minute I was there. My favor part of the whole experience was eating the Mac and Cheese as well as the Ox Tails. I'm very simple and sometimes finicky when it comes to my food. But I had no reservations about trying anything at Sweetie Pie's. The staff was pleasant and helpful. Some of the servers engaged in conversation, and even gave a little history about the restaurant and the town. Over all I had a wonderful time eating, laughing and conversing at Sweetie Pie's. I would definitely visit again! Ps. The dessert was awesome sauce.. Two thumbs up!

Alright this review is two years behind but here goes. Mrs. Robbie is a true sweet person and I wanted to speak to that right off. My Wife and I were visiting her family in the "Lou" and after church Jan 13 2013 we were taken to Sweetie Pie's. I was a little familiar with the show and had heard from a few of her family members how good the food is. I was excited to see what all the hype was about. Thankfully we got a space very close to the doors(it was frigid in St. Louis) and were promptly seated. In total we were a party of eight, and we were take care of well. We got to see Charles and Mrs. Robbie both so that made it pretty cool. It wasn't a shoot day for the show and it made the ambience seem even more authentic because employees were very relaxed and down to earth. My Wife and are big on customer service and it came in waves that day. The food all looked great but I went with something really basic, at least in my mind.....fried yard bird! I must be honest the food was very good but man did it make me curl up later. I didn't give it 5 stars because I've only had the one experience, plus my Wife also had something a little too salty. A good experience though all in all and I'd definitely go back.

I was in town for a conference and looked forward to giving Sweetie Pies a try since I have seen the TV show on OWN. Therefore, a group of us went for dinner. I ordered fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, yams, lemonade, and the meal came with cornbread. Disappointedly, they were not serving collard greens that day. The food was just ok, it was not great! I really had high expectations. From viewing the long lines on the show you would think the food was great! Sadly, it was not, we have better Soul Food in Los Angeles.

LORD HAVE MERCY the food at Upper Crust was not good, but great!!! We drove from Texas to Columbia, MO for an event and decided to drive another 2hrs to experience the food at Sweetie Pies. We have seen a few episodes of the reality show on OWN and salivated for far too long over the food that we see. How could we not take the opportunity to check it out for ourselves. Being there made me feel like I was at a Sunday family dinner with distant cousins. Watching the show definitely helped us put things into perspective. We knew what to expect in terms of the line and long wait. We initially went to Mangrove, but decided to hit up Upper Crust with the hopes of seeing Ms. Robbie. PROS: The security officer who greeted us was personable, charming, and made the 1.5 hr wait seem like 30 mins. There were so many food options to choose from and everything looked delicious. The staff who served the food and ushered us to our table were attentive and so very kind. The portions were more than enough and the food was incredibly amazing; it did not disappoint. In fact, we barely said grace and my child's meatloaf was gone. Everything was on point from the fried chicken, to the sweet potatoes, to the mac'n'cheese and let me not forget Ms. Robbie's tea; it was good too. For dessert I chose the peach cobbler which is my favorite dessert. My grandmother used to make it all of the time for me and no one has ever come close to her recipe. However, let me just say that Ms. Robbie's is as close as I've come to it so much so that it brought a tear to my eyes after a couple of bites. My husband had the caramel cake and he is still talking about it. CONS: The line...there has got to be a way to get the indecisive orderers through the line quicker. It would help to have stanchions in a snaked formation inside of the restaurant to get people out of the outdoor elements. I also suggest additional seating for the elderly who are waiting in line with their party. The cornbread was disappointing as well. The flavor was good, but it wasn't fluffy. Whoever was mixing mixed it waaaay too much. Overall it was a good experience aside from the fact that I accidentally went off and left my peach cobbler. We would definitely go back. We need you in TX real soon so that we can experience it all over again.

The line was a little slow and temperature was a little warm. Everything else was amazing. The atmosphere was welcoming and everyone was very polite. The food had lots of flavor. Saturday evening has karaoke and there were plenty of local talent that deserve record deals. We highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning.

I went to Sweetie Pies tonight (October 30, 2014)...and there is absolutely nothing "Upper Crust" about this place!!!!! When we came in we were greeted by the kitchen workers that had the worst attitudes!!! We basically had to go to blows with them to get some fresh chicken!!! They had attitudes like they didn't want to help and if we were eating them out of house and home!!! Smh...And now...you can't even enjoy sweet tea while dining...you are forced to buy the bottled "Sweetie Pies" sweet Tea...with no refills. I'm sorry, but I'm not impressed. The food is good...but not spectacular. If you are wanting to enjoy some down home cooking in a nice environment...this is NOT the place for you!!

Overpriced OUT THE GATE.....omg I got baked chicken dark it the smallest quarter dark I've seen with 3 sides Mac cheese blacked peas green beans and I got an extra fried wing w iced tea...total $18.31 for 1 person for lunch.... Everything was good except the black eye peas they taste like they came out the can cooked for 10 minutes then served.. The Mac and cheese taste okay made with good sharp cheese...Overall the food was ok/good....which is not a compliment for something that cost almost $20 ... But what I can say this place does a lot of business due to the national promotion of the show on OWN....But again black businesses are always over priced for some reason I don't get it....The Asians can open a similar restaurant get black cooks to cook the good & serve the same thing at half the price & give you more food....I made a special trip here because of the show....after coming here....been there done that.... I will not be coming back....I am going to go to Pappy's Barbeque while visiting here in St Louis....

While having lunch, a group of people were also having lunch behind me. The one gentleman was an uniformed fireman. He complained to the "waitress" that something strange was in his food. She went to get the manager. The fireman repeated his complaint and asked for a refund. The manager said he had to get the "House Manager". The fireman repeated his complaint for the 3rd time. He was asked can they replace the food. He said I just want a refund. The "House Manager" refused to give him a refund. She stated that she did not have his plate & was not sure how much of the food he had consumed. She went back and forth with the group until they just left without a refund or food. The "House Manager" seemed pleased that she had saved the restaurant (what) $13?! I told her that she and her team showed bad customer service. She tried to tell me that they did everything they could to make it right with him... Absolutely NOT! I heard the entire conversation. This previously happened to me after sending undercooked fish back 3 times. They prorated my refund. I just wanted some cooked fish. My bad encounter did not stop me from eating there, but this seems systemic. I hope for their sake that he is not their neighborhood firefighter. I will never spend another dime at Sweetie Pie's. If you read my previous reviews, you know I loved this place.

Heard so much about this place that I needed to check it out. Was surprised not to see a line after all I have heard. Wow, were we disappointed. First of all, I didn't expect cafeteria style service. Guess I should have read the reviews first! Food is good, but nothing special. Staff serving the food were not very pleasant although waitstaff who seated us and served the table were extremely nice. Ordered the smothered pork steak which was good, but not hot. Fried catfish was tasty, mac and cheese was good, but corn bread was just alright.

Was in St Louis for a small mini weekend vacation with family. We just had to stop by Sweetie Pie's for lunch. The food was amazing! We all enjoyed every bit of it. Be prepared for a long line! The staff was pretty nice but the lines were slow. It lacked efficiency. Other than that, it is worth a visit if youre into some good soul food.

I would actually rate this place a 3.5. I'm going to be real honest here, I don't eat a lot of hearty American food, but I was persuaded by a group of friends to try it post finals. I was feeling good about grades in the midst of a diet, so I dared myself to live on the wild side. It's cafeteria style, and averages almost $15/person. Yes! Ickspensive. I would recommend the baked chicken because of the seasoning. My friends made fun of me because I said "I love this chicken juice!". Oh me. Macaroni and cheese? AHMAZING! But almost immediately regret eating it as I could almost feel my arteries getting clogged. Service was great and all the workers were friendly. Their sweet tea is TDF!

Sweetie Pie's is a St Louis and American comfort food icon. They have some of the best Mac and Cheese and Potatoes you'll try. The staff is friendly and very nice. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the food since, I'm not fan of soul food.

I was looking forward to eating at Sweetie Pie's because it was one of my favorite programs on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). My sister, Jewel who lives in East St. Louis knew I was anxious to eat at Sweetie Pie's. As soon as my flight from San Francisco, Ca landed, we deposited my luggage at her home and headed back to St. Louis and straight to Sweetie Pie's. We arrived a few minutes before they opened; however, when we told several people on the outside that I was there from San Francisco, they let us wait inside where we could sit down. One of the cooks came out to tell us that they would be ready to serve in thirty minutes. We didn't mind waiting because it was more comfortable inside. The temperature outside was very chilly. We thanked him and as we waited, other patrons began to come in. When I watched Sweetie Pie's on TV, I always saw a long line of people waiting to get in. As I sat inside, I could understand why patrons lined up to eat at Sweetie Pie's. When they began serving, and I ordered my food, I couldn't wait to sink my teeth in those greens, mac & cheese, corn bread and fried chicken wings. I ordered Peach Cobbler for dessert. I enjoyed my food, but I had to take some home because I couldn't eat all of it. The food was delicious and I can't wait to return to Sweetie Pie's again. The wait staff was very friendly, especially our Waiter, Ronnie Carter. The ambiance in Sweetie Pie's was very comfortable and heartwarming. It was worth the wait. Thanks to everyone who made my first trip to Sweetie Pie's a memorable one that I will not forget.

We had been to the Manchester Rd. location twice, perhaps 2 years ago or so. We loved it! Our son and daughter-in-law had been thinking about their great meal there while cycling through Asia, and on their request we took them back. Except, having read recent poor reviews on Yelp about that location, I steered them to the newer Uppercrust location. We waited in line for one hour, starting at 5:45 Saturday night. By the time we got the food to our table, everything was ice cold. That's just no way to eat a hot meal. Why don't they have two cash registers to speed up the process? The ribs were knuckly, not meaty, and many a side dish suffered from having too much sugar. All in all, a big fat meh. There are so many more restaurants from which to choose...I will definitely go elsewhere next time.

We stayed in St. Charles so the drive was a bit long. Wasn't hard to get to..although you do drive through a questionable area. Every aspect of this restaurant looks NOTHING like it does on TV. The front of the restaurant was unkept as far as the overgrown grass/weeds. The patio was lacking TLC as well. There was not a line as other reviewers have stated so we were quickly served. Outside of chicken, smothered pork chops and meatloaf, you had to choose the daily special. My wife wanted fish but had to settle for chicken. As other reviewers stated, I also feel the food is overpriced. ($11.00 for a dish and 2 sides) The servers were nice and patient. We wanted to try Sweetie Pie's tea but were told they were out...can't understand why since the tea was started in her restaurant. We were seated by a nice wait staff. The food was GREAT...I've read reviews that the food wasn't good....but we found the food to be very good. The mac and cheese, peach cobbler, green beans and chicken were all delicious. Now, true to TV the staff were arguing in front of customers. It was very unprofessional and disappointing to see this type of behavior. Overall the food was very good and I'd recommend everyone stopping by to give it a taste.

Love the food ... and the wait not as bad as my first visit to the Manchester location but still a line on a Saturday afternoon. Hadn't tried the chicken wings yet (very good) so that is what I opted for with mac and cheese (excellent) and rice and brown gravy (pretty good but not what I grew up on) as my sides. This was my reward for keeping 10 lbs off - it was worth it and I ate it all, unlike my normal way of eating these days which always has me taking home leftovers. The place was pretty warm so not sure what was up with that but my impression was that wasn't out of the norm. Same good service and friendly staff that will bring you water and napkins if you ask (not sure you can get them on your own however). It is a good place for comfort food, well made and plenty of choices. Worth a visit.

On a business trip in the area and had to stop. The food was lukewarm. Fried chicken was just okay a little disappointing. My favorite was the Mac and cheese. The cabbage and yams were good as well but would have been better if they were hot. Saved my caramel cake for later but was disappointed so it went into the hotel garbage can.

First let me stay I'm very proud of Sweetie Pie's success and will give it another try and support it if out of town family wants to go, the food is just OK to me and for the life of me I don't know why the service is soo slow for a cafeteria style restaurant, it's just not flowing right to me.

soulfood is always a hit and miss if you know how to cook. I went here on a short vacation to visit family. My family was not to enthusied that I wanted to go to sweetie pies, but they let me go and see for myself. The chicken was good but a little salty for me, the greens were fresh but (I can cook them better) the dressing :( and the turkey wings (DRY) was not pleased, meat loaf :( . The only thing that i like was her mac and cheese and the crust to the peach cobbler. The highlight was that i got a chance to see Miss Robbie and take pictures with her. I would go again but i would be very selctive as to what I would be buying.

Not impressed. I frequent restaurants in many cities. I look for soul food restaurants in certain cities and have been treated to the likes of Aunt Kizzie's back porch in California, The Beautiful in ATL , Warm Daddy's in Philly......Sweetie Pie's is not in this league. The food is just okay. The service and general treatment sucks. We visited here during a wknd celebrating the 90th b day of my father in law...when 2e pulled up the line was halfway down the block. I tapped.out then......there a eateries exclusive to STL that are not where I live now so only because others in our party of eleven wanted to stay we did. The security guard (WTF?) told us everyone in our party had to stand in line .....,including the 90 yr old AND my bro in law 6 wks post-op from open heart surgery ( couldn't eat the food just there with his wife). While the guard was schooling us on the evils of not standing in line a guy came out of the restaurant....went to his car which had been broken into.while he was in side eating. The thieves sit somewhere across the street, watch folks getting out and once they are on the line inside the restaurant...break into their cars.....niiiiice. Soooo we stood in line for 2+ hours we got cold, dry, left over soul food. All of the staff that we encountered had frowns on their faces and really nasty attitudes. Of all of the places that I mentioned in this review this is the one that I would not go back to . The "Oprah effect " and the television show are why this place is still.open. it is not the food. it is not the service. Sweetie Pie needs to Thank Oprah

I came here specifically because I watch the show...and I ordered the fried catfish, okra and yams. Catfish was fried perfect, okra was really good and the yams were ok. I got the wings and potato salad to go and I thought they were just ok. I enjoyed the meal, would I go back? I would to try something different. I also had the peach cobbler, which was really good. Went with a group of ladies and we enjoyed the meal, and got to take pictures with Charles! He was really nice and accommodating...I am sure he gets asked a lot to take pictures. Long lines and not really a fan of cafeteria style dining. They also had entertainment. Definitely an experience!

We waited almost 2 hours in line but all agreed it was worth the wait! The staff was very friendly and you could feel God in the food! The Mac n cheese is a must along with the buttermilk pie! Put on your comfy shoes and arrive with an empty stomach!

I have never seen the show on the OWN network but my mom tells me it's pretty good. I doubt that, but I told her--after having dined at the now famous Sweetie Pie's--that the food is damn good. There are two locations in St. Louis. This review is for the location in Grand Center, an entertainment district in West Central St. Louis. I'm being somewhat generous with my rating here. I would really like to give a rating of 3.5; that would be 4 stars for the food, 3 stars for the restaurant dining experience and service. The first time I visited, I was disappointed to find out that they were closed on Monday's. It was extremely annoying to have learned this only after having shown up. But this seems fairly normal in St. Louis. Many places are not open on Monday and close early on weeknights (we are really spoiled here in DC!). And I should have just looked at the website so I can't be mad at anybody but me. So I came back the following week and was treated to some super fine southern cuisine. Perfectly spiced, crispy fried catfish, and stewed, fall-off-the-bone beef short ribs. Sides were mashed potatoes and fried corn. The catfish had a thick but flakey breading and was perfectly salted. I was surprised by this because the soul food joints in DC have been scared away from seasoning (read: add salt) their food. But this ain't DC. This is Mississippi cuisine by way of St. Louis. The short ribs were so tender that you can't really say "fall-off-the-bone" because if you try to lift the bone the meat wouldn't even stay on the bone long enough to fall off. It had a sweet and heavenly butter taste that I've never had anywhere else. On another visit, I had the fried chicken wing dinner with collard greens and mashed potatoes. I have to say the mashed potatoes were not that good. They were so creamy and lacking in clumps of potatoes that they seemed to be instant potatoes from out of the box. The venue is cafeteria style so you go through the line, grab a trey and silverware, choose your food and drink, then pay for your food. The dining area is spacious and clean. And, unlike most DC soul food joints, there is an adjacent full service bar. I imagine this place being super full on Sundays. There is also a banquet area with outdoor space. Sweetie Pie's gives you an authentic soul food dining experience. It is far from high-end or pretentious, which only adds to its appeal.

It was a hour and a half wait but the food was delicious . I got smothered pork chop,Mac and cheese and corn. I met Charles and he was very nice and took a picture with me. The parking was not the best it's street parking so hard to find a place to park. I will definately be going back

Mhmm, mhmm, mhmm this is good ole comfort food...but consider yourself warned, come here on an empty stomach!!! I came here today for lunch with a few coworkers and left more than satisfied. As I write this, my pants may or may not come unbuttoned (and I didn't even get as much food as everyone else!) After much debate, I opted for a slice of their meatloaf alongside cornbread and rice & gravy. I had heard such good things about their peach cobbler too, so I had to try that as well. Well while I left a few bites on my plate and shared my peach cobbler, I still stuffed myself beyond the brim! The meatloaf I had was cooked just right, leaving it nice & juicy, and was topped with sweet ketchup. The cornbread had a nice crust to it, but was nothing out of this world. The rice & gravy was pretty bland, but the rice was cooked well so it ended up being ok and paired well with the meatloaf. When and if I return though, I want to try the mac & cheese...it looks pretty delicious. Last but not least, the peach cobbler was pretty amazing. While it left my teeth feeling covered in a layer of sugar, it had a nice & crunchy top crust and a rich/sugary/buttery flavor. It might have been those last few bites of the cobbler that pushed me over the uncomfortably full line.

Food was everything I expected and more !! Big portions & tasty ! Most of staff friendly except servers behind the counter dishing up your food but it's a small price to pay for quality food !! I was hopping miss Robbie popped out so I could get a pic but no luck

Line is very long so be prepared to wait. Food is pretty basic soul food. If you just don't feel like cooking or can't cook soul food then go here but if you can cook soul food...its pretty disapointing and it's hit or miss. There is tasteable sugar in EVERYTHING. I've never put sugar in black eye peas...yuck. Macaroni and cheese is good and fried chicken/pork chops are good too. Baked chicken was not good and i didnt care for the smothered pork steak but my boyfriend does. The roast beef was also tough. Banana pudding is good. Do NOT...I say DO NOT buy that new bottled iced tea! It is absolutely horrid! It tastes like children's medicine not to mention it's 2.75 a bottle. To me it's really not worth the wait but to each his own. I only go when my sister comes from out of town. We've been there three times and she was actually disappointed this time which makes me happy because I don't have to take her there anymore :-)

I simply LOVE this restaurant. I've been a customer since approximately 2004-5 and I love their food and the show as well. Try the smothered pork steak, meatloaf and fried fish. The best sides are the mac and cheese, dressing, sweet potatoes, and they have THE BEST corn I ever had.

Oprah got it right with this place. The service is outstanding, including the young men that serve you drinks and take your tray to the table. Also worth mentioning is the lack of a hurrry up and order cafeteria type service. The ladies behind the counter tell you to take your time and are well prepared to recommend meatless dishes. I had the Hot wings mixed with one regular fried wing along with greens, mac n cheese and monkey bread. Everything was damn good. The wings were the best. I was upset I only got three until I realized they were old school winglet/drum combos. I also could't finish my plate so it was plenty. I want to note that the monkey bread was really good, could tell it was homemade cause the crust had a slight chew. The only thing was the sweet tea was diabetic coma sweet, sugar water sweet; it must be a St. louis thing sweet. I was too full to try any dessert. This is a must go if you are in the area.

Damn. Double Damn. Somebody slap me cause I just died and went to heaven. The food here is really good, about as down-home as you can get. I went on a recent trip to St. Louis and ended up going to Sweetie Pies 2 times. Fried Chicken? Crusty and perfectly seasoned. Mac and Cheese? Sno' nuff good! Cabbage? Excellent. Corn Bread? Just like Momma used to make - and no, not that sweet stuff they call Jiffy. Peach Cobbler? I damn near came in my pants, the Cobbler was better than 5 orgasms at once. Now, unless your cardiologist gave you a clean bill of health, this is not the type of food for the calorie conscience, nor is it meant to be consumed everyday. But damn, it sure is good. Check them out and please bring your patience hat, the lines and wait can be long.

Not impressed. Pork chop was room temp and not thoroughly cooked and completely dry. Mac and cheese, green beans and cornbread were good. Maybe I caught them on an off day. It's not bad for cafeteria style southern cooking. Not certain I will give them another try when I visit St. Louis again.

The staff on the service line lacked professionalism....so I would rate them "zero" stars. I had chicken macaroni and cheese with yams. Banana pudding(the absolute best I've ever tasted)was my dessert. Thanks to all of the other yelpers, I prepared myself for the cafeteria style service. They did have someone carry my tray to my table. No complaints on the food except for the cornbread. I expected it to taste a lot better. It seemed to taste salty. I would go again, but I would try the upper crust location just to see if the service was better. My seat was located right next to the piano and a keyboard. I could have played it while I ate. That was odd!! The place could be bigger or at least move the instruments unless they're expecting a live band!! Ps: If Calvin is your waiter.....your experience will be a pleasant one....he gets five stars!! Great food. No matter how you get there, you should walk or ride a bicycle home to burn off some of the calories!!!

On a quick family trip to St. Louis we planned on stopping at the Upper Crust on Friday evening and going to Mangrove on Saturday. Simply based on what we have seen on the TV show. When we got to Upper Crust there was a line outside of the door, with a loud and stupid security guard screaming at everyone. We waited in line for and hour and 10 minutes. Just to get to the food and have the servers be rude. I ordered a catfish dinner (for my son) and fried chicken wing dinner (for me). The server asked me if I wanted a kids plate. I said yes, the catfish dinner in a kids, I did not order a kids plate because there wasn't one on the menu. That fool yelled at me, saying "we don't have kids plates in fish"! What the hell did she ask for? She then said they only have kids plates for the chicken, as if I could read her mind and know she was asking about the fried chicken. I had a bad taste in my mouth from there. The ignorant security guard said Ms. Robbie was on her way, and I saw her sister Jan send him to the back and told him "she's here". We were there until after closing because of the long wait in line and she never came out to speak to her customers. I just have the impression that they have gotten so big, to the point of customer appreciation and attention to details in the food has slacked up quite a bit. Being from the south, I know good soul food and this is not it! Instead for fried chicken, it should called dried chicken. The seasoning on it was regular ole good not amazing and it was dry. The fish was just okay. The yams were good. The green beans and black eye peas tasted like they came straight out of the can. The man & cheese was the most disgusting mess I have ever seen, let alone tasted. It was lumpy and had way to much thrown in it for no reason. I was surprised there was no fountain drinks, although there was a fountain drink machine. We had to buy little bottles of soda and if you wanted more, buy another bottle. I had tea, but if I wanted a refill I had to pay for it! I am disappointed and appalled. I really had high expectations of this restaurant. Needless to say, I did not go to Mangrove the next day. I had a better meal at the casino's buffet. If and when I do return to St. Louis, I will spend my lunch and dinner times at Pappy's Smokehouse!

I'm from NYC and my sister is a huge fan of the show, so I took her to Upper Crust in St. Louis for her birthday. When you have high expectations, they usually aren't met, but that wasn't the case here. The food was A-MA-ZING. The fried chicken was juicy and flavorful. The catfish was crispy, well-seasoned and fresh. The mac and cheese was just good, but the corn bread was out of this world. I don't know what they put in it, but it was delicious and had a nice crisp to it on the outside w/o being over-baked. I wish they had a location in NY! I'd be there every week. The best part, which made the trip for us, was that we got to take a picture w/ Miss Robbie who was on her way out, but stopped to make time for a photo. Her sister who works there took a photo w/ us too as did Charles, who looks the same as he does on tv. Everyone was so nice and down-to-earth. It was the most memorable dining experience we've had in a very long time.

People hating on this place are just that: haters. I ate at Sweetie Pie's the other day, and it was the best meal I've had in a good six months, if not a year, in part because I can barely afford to feed myself anymore, let alone eat fancy restaurant meals, due to some personal failings, and in part because it was genuinely that good. The main argument I've heard against Sweetie Pie's is that it doesn't sell anything that you couldn't easily replicate in your home kitchen. This is only true if you're an old black lady who doesn't mind everything you own smelling like fried chicken for the rest of your -- probably short, at that point, right? -- life. You're hit with that fried chicken smell before you even walk in the door, in the street, in the weird almost-alley between the Urban League, whatever that is, and Sweetie Pie's itself. If the Urban League is still located in that building, I can't imagine that Sweetie Pie's is their least favorite occupant of the building across the way. And I'll just leave it at that. LOL On the other side of Sweetie Pie's is the VA hospital. If you suffer a mid-meal stroke, and you used to be in the military, they can roll your ass right across the street. (They'll probably take you in even if you weren't in the military, but I can't imagine you'd want to go there.) Sweetie Pie's sells a lot more than just fried chicken; but I guess the smell of the various baked and braised items just isn't as powerful. None of them looked as appetizing to me, sitting there in hotel pans stewing in vats of greasy liquid -- but my cousin had the turkey leg, and he said it was amazing. The old bald guy who brought us our cups with ice and straws -- the loveable old James -- agreed. He said he eats one every Sunday. I've never seen a 90 year-old man so lucid before in my life, let alone so enthusiastic. I of course went with the fried chicken, and I'd probably do the exact same thing if I went back, for a few reasons: (a) Cool people go to restaurants, find one thing that they like, and keep ordering it over and over again; (b) How should I phrase this? Well, let's just say it's hard to go wrong with fried chicken at a soul food restaurant; and (c) the shit was just that good. A fried chicken meal comes with three wings and either two or three side dishes. The one that comes with two is priced at exactly $10 even, to appeal to cheapskates. It's probably the cheapest meal on the menu. Average is probably more like $13, and I'd imagine that's a lot of people's problem with Sweetie Pie's -- it's not out of this world expensive, but for a certain kind of brother it's a little bit rich. I was eyeing that three side dish option, but my old man was paying, he only went with the two, and I didn't want to ruin our relationship. I figured, worst case scenario, I could stop at McDonald's on the way home. I'm not afraid to admit that I've done that. I'm a true fat-ass, not one of these fakers. Turns out I had nothing to be worried about. These were the biggest chicken wings I've ever seen in my life. No hyperbole. I actually kinda didn't want to eat them, because what kind of chicken has wings that big? Imagine the size of the entire bird, if the wings are that big. It must be the size of the late, great Gary Coleman. With wing prices these days upwards of $3/lb, they must be paying out the ass to get only wings that big. Maybe $10 for three and them and a couple of sides is not such a bad deal? They go through enough wings (there was a line out the door the entire time I was there) that they're always "hot out the grease." Mine were so hot I actually hurt myself a little bit shoving them in face as quickly as possible. I'm sure it wasn't a pleasant thing to watch. My bad to whoever was there and may have seen this. But sometimes a brother's gotta do what a brother's gotta do. I was half-tempted to take my shirt. That chicken brought something out of me. I guess it's not so difficult to fry three chicken wings, but I will say that these were perfectly executed: crispy to the point where you could hear yourself eating it; tasty, but not seasoned to the point where it overpowers the taste of the chicken, to the extent that chicken has a taste. The dressing was just alright, in a "delicious, because it's dressing, but obviously made from a mix" sort of way. I was thisclose to going with either the greens or the green beans, but I can't turn down an opportunity to eat dressing on a non-holiday, as a matter of principle. THe macaroni and cheese is deeply satisfying, in a "my life will be a week shorter than it would have been otherwise as a result of this" sort of way. There's a shedload of cheese in it, forming a perfect crisp-but-not-quite-burnt protective cheese layer at its edges. They must make sure that everyone gets a bit of that layer with their order. You can tell they take a certain pride in their work -- though it's also clear that they could care less about your health. LOL

Sweetie Pie's Upper Crust is slap your momma good comfort food! It is a cafeteria style line and your food is taken to your table for you where your server then gets your drinks and anything else you need. I had the fried chicken wings, there were three large pieces, green beans, candied yams, Mac and cheese, cornbread and peach cobbler. The chicken was to die for - meaty, juicy, and the breading was crispy and delicious! The green beans were cooked with pork and had a great taste. The Mac and cheese almost had my family in tears - it tasted just like my grandmother's homemade Mac! The yams and cobbler were perfectly seasoned and cooked. We had sweet tea and lemonade and both were great! Lemonade was sweet and smooth and the tea was freshly brewed and southern sweet! We had a great experience here and left very full but very happy!

I thought the food and the service was great! I also loved that the place was so clean. Sometimes in Soul Food restaurants you ignore the lack of detail in the environment because you're really there just for the food. However, the atmosphere was clean and comfortable along with the great tasting food and service!

Been wanting to go to Sweetie Pie's Upper Crust for a long, long time! Heard great things and had friends who went and loved it. They are located at 3643 Delmar Blvd. in the Grand Center area of Midtown St. Louis. Walked in and the cafeteria line is at the back of the restaurant. Very friendly servers and we went on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. The place was about half full and the place is BIG! Had the fried catfish (2 planks) along with mac and cheese and green beans. I thought the catfish was VERY GOOD! The mac and cheese was very REALLY good and the green beans were delicious too. You also received a piece of homemade corn bread. The service was very friendly and the admosphere inviting. Would definately return for another visit . . . and another serving of delicious food!

Made to visits to this location while in St. Louis for my family reunion. The food was to die for. Gave you your monies worth. Both times, I had to ask for a container to go. I had the fried chicken wing meal with 2 sides. The chicken winngs were huge. They don't make those size wings in the DC area. The staff were friendly and very attentive. Would go back again if ever in the area. Very clean.

This is some "down home, this is how you get a man, I wish my momma could burn like this, she put not only her foot in it but an arm & leg too" type of eating. This is not where you visit if "I want good food, but Im still gonna follow my diet" type of place. This is the splurge place. This is your cheat day restaurant. Forget the fat, calories, etc... Know that it has all of that and one day of hood eating wont kill you. You are served buffet style. The dinners range from $12-$18. They come with a protein, two or three sides & cornbread. You are served Flintstone sized helpings so come with an empty stomach. If you are like me and unable to finish, they have to go cartons & bags on hand. Just ask your server. Visit 1: Neck Bones, mac n cheese, okra & cornbread. Visit 2: Fried chicken wings, mac n cheese, green beans & cornbread. Everything was amazing!! Yasss Jesus Yass!!! With every bite allI kept thinking was, "There IS a God". I admit my deadly sin of choice is gluttony and if there is a place for me to exercise said deadly sin, this here would be my place of choice. The only thing i was not a fan of was the cornbread. This is country cornbread so its kinda dry with a hint of sweet. If you are used to the cake like cornbread, you wont get that here... So move on. The desserts vary by the day, but on the two occasions I visited, they had peach cobbler. The cobbler is grip the table, eyes roll into your head, clinch your thighs kind of good. Get you some... Every Time. The only thing missing is the scoop of ice cream.. But, you'll live without it. Would I come again if in the area. Yes ma'am..O would fly here just for a meal... In fact, I'll be on the first flight.

***The Food*** Fried chicken - delicious Green beans - delicious. My kids even loved them. Boiled okra - cooked just right Yams - on the money Mac and Cheese - too damn good Ribs - good and tender oven cooked, non smoked ribs with bbq sauce. I like smoked ribs with a dry rub and no sauce. If you don't mind oven cooked ribs, covered in BBQ sauce, then go for the ribs. Baked chicken - my kid enjoyed the baked chicken Cornbread - ought to be a crime. I could slice a tomato and onion to make a cornbread, tomato, and onion sandwich. Lol Peach cobbler - delicious Pear cobbler - delicious Peach Iced Tea - really good ***The Experience*** We arrived in St. Louis on Monday and visited the new Dellwood location because Upper Crust and Mangrove locations are closed on Monday. Arrived @ Upper Crust location @ 1130am on Tuesday with hopes to see Ms. Robbie but she wasn't there. Her sister Linda was working though and she took pictures with some of the customers. There's metered parking on the street and a parking across the street. There was a line from the food service line to the front door/hostess stand which was unattended. We stood in a moving line for about 15-20 minutes. T-shirts - only small sized T-shirts were available, so no souvenirs for me or my family members, lol. The menu does not reflect all of the food items on the menu. It appears to have only the two meat daily specials. The chalkboard menu at the service line also doesn't reflect all the menu items. When you get to the service line I was surprised to see there's a lot more meat choices. There's a sign that indicates you cannot change your order once your plate is prepared. I ordered the fried chicken because that's what was on the chalkboard menu and also what I saw on the food service line first. As I moved further down the food service line, I saw other items such as meatloaf, baked chicken, and ribs that was not on the paper or chalkboard menu. Since the fried chicken was already on my plate, I didn't ask to change my order after reading the sign. Instead, I ordered rib dinner to go and the fried chicken dinner for dine in. It would be nice if Sweetie Pies provided a full menu so customers are fully aware of what's on the menu One of Tim's managers should be able to improve this process. The silverware station had holders for six silverware containers but there was only one container and only forks were available at 1130AM The bar was closed and I didn't see any signage for bar hours. I was on vacation and may have wanted a cold beer with my lunch. The staff was nice and provided good service. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. The bathroom was very clean as well. Durrell, our server was very nice and kept our water glasses full. He checked on us frequently. My Sweetie Pies experience was good. The food was consistently outstanding between the Dellwood and Upper Crust locations. The next time I am in the Lou, I will definitely come back to Sweetie Pies. The fried chicken, cornbread, yams, and cobbler are worth the price of admission.

Visiting St. Louis for the first time, and going to Sweetie Pie's was a must!!! I wanted this place to exceed my expectations, and in some aspects it did...however, there are also things that need improvement. The food was great overall, but a few lil service issues are keeping me from giving it 5 stars. Let's start with the good: The fried chicken wings, mac n cheese, yams, meatloaf, and peach cobbler were superb. Very flavorful and cooked perfectly. My meatloaf was lukewarm...so it had to be sent back, but it was still good. Here's the not so great: the cafeteria line serving style threw me off. The food just sits out, and you tell the staff what u want and they put it on the plate for you. The staff appeared to be tired and not too friendly, but it was an hour before closing so maybe they were worn out...it gets busy. Another thing...they have a fountain soda machine...but NO REFILLS!!!! I drink quite a bit during my meals, so this was quite saddening!. Pricing: in comparison to serving size, it's a little on the high side but still comparable to other soul food restaurants. When you walk in, it's a little confusing. There was no line when we got there, so we had no clue that we were supposed to walk to the back and order. We kinda stood around waiting to be greeted by a staff person, and another patron told us what to do. Perhaps there could be a staff member to welcome guests and kinda answer questions. Having said all this, I have every intention to visit this place once more before leaving...and will update/give another review.

Three piece wing with 2 sides mac n cheese and sweet potatoes its ok nothin special but the service sucks 100%!!! We walk in and nobody speaks until I do . The buffet bar is only half fulll I still order they get my food from the back and it's barely Luke warm obviously not in a warmer just sitting out. Totally a waste!!!!! Should have went to Crackle Barrel its always on point with breakfast!!!

Sadly disappointed. Only 3 entrees choices of the 6 for the day. Ordered the meatloaf it was tasty BUT not particularly hot. Mac and cheese was yummy, but again none of the food was hot. Ordered a soft drink. They have the Coke freestyle machine, a pretty common occurrence in CA in all fast food places. Here you can't get it yourself. Uh sort of defeats the point as half the fun is seeing the endless choices. Table service was lacking, basically slow. Maybe I'm a neat freak but I like my table clean and spic and span. All and all I've been wanting to eat here forever, but likely wouldn't go back. Sorry Miss Robbie didn't hit the mark on the night I visited. I also wondered why the the Mangrove location is higher rated, I guess I now know.

Well first of all it was HOT standing out side we got there at 11:30 to get in line we were suppose to be in line for 15 minutes they did not open up until 12:00.. I ordered catfish with three sides yams which was good, Mac n cheese which was ok also, dressing was not good at all.. I ordered peach and pear cobbler which I have not tasted as of yet .also they have gravy but since I don't eat beef I asked the server what kind of gravy she did not know I can't stand when people don't know.. I live in Cali and when I come back I won't be coming back to Sweetie Pie but I will continue to watch the show.. I guess if Miss Robie don't cook it herself it's not going to be great.

A visit to Sweetie Pie's was a "must" during my recent visit to St. Louis. After three years of being a fan of the show "Welcome to Sweetie Pies" I finally made it to the Upper Crust. Let me start by saying that I was super excited about the entire experience not just the food; understanding that food can be hit or miss at any restaurant depending on day, time, etc. My friend and I went to Sweetie Pies on a Sunday evening around 6pm. We missed the after church/early dinner rush which was perfect because we were only in line for about 20 mins. or so. We had already made up in our minds that we'd be in line for about an hour, so we had no problem waiting only 20 mins! Our food was delicious! My friend and I decided we'd each order different things then share. Collectively, we had chicken wings, baked chicken, mac & cheese, corn bread, black eyed peas, green beans cabbage, peach cobbler and banana pudding. Yes, ALL of that and it was great! It reminded both of us of grandma's cooking. Overall, I enjoyed my experience. Maybe it was the novelty of it all or maybe it was the familiar 'grandma's house' feel of the place but I really liked Sweetie Pie's! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes soul food.

We had to stop here on the way home after we made a trip to Collinsville IL for a wedding. We had the fried chicken, Mac n cheese, black eye peas, yams, dressing, green beans, cornbread, peach cobbler and had to try the sweet tea. Let's start off with the good! All of the food was pretty good. I will say I had some of the best Mac n cheese here. There was a golden crust of cheese which and just like how my mom makes it. The black eye peas/green beans with potato and our cornbread was perfect. The yams were a little too sweet for our liking and the fried chicken was good but I still like mine with a little more spices. Now the peach cobbler was perfect. It was not too doughy not too sweet with the perfect amount of crust and I would order it over and over. Our server was Paula and we thought she was great, friendly and fast. Now on Oct the famous sweet tea....it was not to either of our liking. It was toooooo sweet and left a strange after taste so I'm not sure what was off about it but it was definitely not good to us at all. As for the servers, the last lady that sliced the cornbread and gave us our peach cobbler was supper nice the other lady she was just okay.... But I know it was because she was trying to keep the line moving. Would I go here again, yes if it was along the way.

Like most folks, Sweetie Pies's was high on my list of places to visit when in St. Louis. After years of waiting I finally made it! My dining buddy and I were drooling over the thoughts of fried chicken, yams, mac and cheese, and other soul food staples. When we arrived on a Saturday afternoon, we were prepared for a ridiculously long wait. Nope, not on this day. Sweeeetttt! Once we entered the door, because we were so hungry after a 4 hour drive, we darn near sprinted to the line. The food was served cafeteria style. Portions were pretty good. I ordered the fried chicken breasts, mac and cheese, and yams. My meal came with a piece of corn bread. To drink, I ordered the sweet tea. I don't know if it's because I've had so many years to fantasize about this food, but upon first bite I thought it was just ok. I mean it was solid. I love the perfectly crispy crust on the chicken and both my side were delicious until the last bite, but I just don't understand the craze. It was good, but not exceptional. I have to say, the sweet tea was horrid! Oh...my...goodness! It was as if they put way too much citric acid in it. I couldn't even drink it. I had my friend taste it just to see if I was overreacting, but she didn't like it either. No bueno! Next time I am in St. Louis, I won't go out of my way to visit. The food is really good as well as the service. Prices are fairly reasonable too. It is worth a visit to at least once. Not sure if it's exceptional enough to wait hours in line.

Not what I expected. Sweetie pies was our first stop when we landed. The service was not so friendly, the staff serving the food rolled his eyes and huff when my friend changed his mind about getting a piece of chicken. We let them know it was our first experience just to beware of us being a little slow and they didn't really care. They just treated us like we should know the routine. The food was not so great. I never had my black eyed peas to be so sweet. The cornbread was dry and my mashed potatoes was overly powered with garlic, the mac & cheese, sweet potato pie sweet tea, and chocolate cake was delicious. It was a great experience but I wouldn't go back again.

Above all the customer service is amazing here! There were so many people that asked if I needed anything. The food was a little disappointed compared to what I was expected at the famous and broadcasted food place. The spicy chicken wings were really good and moist, the cornbread was a little dry, the Mac and cheese tasted great but left a lot of grease on my plate, the green beans were exactly what you'd expect. I also had the peach cobler which was pretty mushy and had a little too much cinnamon for my liking.

I visited this restaurant on March 20, 2014, and I enjoyed my meal, dessert and staff. I met Ms. Robbie and her sister, Linda. I took photos with them and enjoyed our waitress, Ms. Paula. I enjoyed the entire experience and plan a return trip toS Louis. Ms. Robbie did a beautiful job with this location.

On our way for winter retreat. Wanted to try the food at Sweetie pies. Guess what. They are closed until jan 3. What a waste of time. Would be nice if they updated web site.

To each their own. I'm giving Sweetie pies 5 stars and I mean it. I was vising for a wedding and this place was on my list of things to do. We went on a Friday at around 4pm. First off I wasn't expecting to see Miss Robbie but there she was chilling hanging out with some customers. She was very friendly and social to her guest. The food was off the chain. I had the fried chicken, mac and cheese, candied yams, green beans and corn bread. I had to take a to go plate for my leftovers. I was not about to leave them behind. My husband cleaned his plate of cat fish etc. Oh the pear cobbler was ok. I would rather stick with the peaches though. The food was still good the next day. I don't understand the bad reviews but hey maybe the cook was upset that day. Lol My mission was to get some great soul food and that's just what I did. One more thing! The chicken wings so tender and not full of grease. The mac and cheese OMG! Don't listen to what people say. They don't know about this here. In my Jon B voice. Lol

We were soooo excited to be able to try Sweetie Pies during our recent trip to St. Louis and boy were we disappointed. I'm sure this review will seem a little harsh because of Sweetie Pies reputation, but I'm just being honest. I don't know if it's just this location or what. The service was good, but the food was NOT. It was so bad, I couldn't eat my food.....and I'm not quick to pass on food..... sad but true ; ) my plate was still full when we left and I just had to get dinner someplace else. I had fried catfish which was flavorless, mac & cheese that was so salty I couldn't eat it, and flavorless green beans! My kids had fried chicken wings which were very good and turned out to be the most edible part of the meal and mac & cheese which they wouldn't eat either. My husband had fried buffalo, which he said was just ok, potato salad which was good, and cole slaw. The lemonade and iced tea were really good, but I wanted a really good meal, not just beverages. I find it hard to believe Sweetie Pies' reputation was built on the caliber of food that we had. My husband is from Mississippi and I spent half of my life in Memphis, TN, so we've had really good southern soul food. The so called "Mississippi Southern Cooking" we had at Sweetie Pies isn't even in the same realm of the best soul food we've had and we expected it to be because of their reputation. So, we were severely let down and left wanting a refund for the awful food and wasted time.

This was my first visit to Sweetie Pies newest location-Upper Crust. I normally go to the Mangrove location. All I can say is, it was highly disappointing. I ordered the roast beef, which is only served on Sundays. The beef was soo dry and tough, not to mention the fact it was bland. I also ordered the mac-n-cheese, which was very good. I ordered the dressing which wasn't bad and opted for the corn bread. I should have went with my first mind and opted for all side dishes. The highlight of my visit to this location was seeing Charles and the camera crew, since they were filming yesterday. I think I'll stick to eating at the Mangrove location. The food taste better and is cheaper. I'm not understanding how this location is suppose to be upscale. The Mangrove location looks better than this one, seems to function better also.

Planned a trip to the "LOU" to finally try Sweetie Pies. Everyone was talking about how good the food it, so we wanted to try it ourselves. 1. Line was not too bad. It moved and the wait was expected. 2. Front desk had a roll of paper towels and some type of cleaner. Looks like they were cleaning before they opened and they just left the supplies there. Dining area was actually clean and neat. 3. We pulled the Menu up online, and it stated what was available that day (Sat.). Apparently, no one had updated the menu on their website and you had to read what was written on the board or some paper menu they printed out. 4. No clean Silverware. When we mentioned it, they treated us like we had done something wrong. 5. Servers were kinda of rude. And didn't really care or welcomed you. 6, Food was OK. Nothing really that great about it. Black-eyed peas were very salty, Cornbread was not that good. Mac & Chesse, was good (just good). Yams were very Good. Sweet Tea was Awful. OMG. Like trying to drink a cup of sugar. 7. Waiter was very nice and accomodating. We had some fish that was very cold and he replaced it with fresh and hot pieces without any problem or questions. Our experience was OK. We wanted to Go and we Went. Don't have to check out Mangrove location. Will try another soul food place, when we come back to the LOU, next year.

Loved the food! Cafeteria like serving style. Found this place online as a must eat in St. Louis. We were there an hour before opening because we were that excited. They were nice enough to let us in and sit and wait. The line quickly grew. I almost did not get their peach cobbler because it just looked ok, but the taste is absolutely heavenly! The mac and cheese is crazy good! Sweetie Pie's is a must when in St. Louis!

I had no idea there was a show based on Oprah Channel. I was visiting on business and someone recommended this restaurant. SMH. Who charges for refills of tea? They do. I think the food is prepared earlier and heated up as ordered. The food seamed microwaved because the meatloaf was cold in the center. Home cooking? I think not. Instant mashed potato's? I am from Georgia, honey...in the south to serve instant mashed potato's is for single men and ladies who can't get ot don't have a man..as my gramma used to say. Don't get me wrong, but it I can't get over charging for sweet tea refills.

Wow, it was delicious! Being from the true south I was skeptical of this northern take on soul food, but I found it to be truly delicious. The portions were very generous, and we left with a full stomach. I came to St. Louis just for Sweetie Pie's and Ms. Robbie delivered. The issues for me were the long line to get food, and the fact that you had to buy canned/bottled drinks (except tea). I wish they offered fountain drinks, and had a separate line for take out orders. The take out orders seemed to slow the line down. Other than that I loved the experience, and I miss the food. I'm sure they will continue to improve the service and food. Although I found both the food and service to already be great!

I decided to check out Sweetie Pies for my first time, which happened to be at the Upper Crust location. I found the menu a little confusing, and a full plate of food, with only water to drink, was $17. My friend had just one meat and two sides, leaving his plate partially empty, and acquired a can of generic soda for a total of $12. The overpriced ala carte menu, and having to purchase drinks individually, are my reasons for the loss of one star. Some of the items on Sweetie Pie's menu were among the best foods I have tasted of their kind, and most definitely the best I have had at any restaurant. I would not recommend the chicken and dumplings or green beans, which were borderline flavorless; however, what was good is seemingly worth the trip time after time. The limitation of getting one meat on a steep priced menu made getting a piece of meatloaf seem like it may not be the most filling option, but it was amazing. Furthermore, I'm not a huge fan of sweet potatoes, but I ordered them anyway -- no regrets! The combined taste of the meatloaf and sweet potatoes was simply too good to be true. I only had a taste of the mac & cheese from my friend's plate, but wow! Very much the same as the meatloaf and sweet potatoes; that mac & cheese may have been the best I've had in my life (and I won't mind going back to confirm whether or not this is true). The cabbage was really good. I wouldn't change anything about it, but I don't know if it had the same OMG-WOW-factor of the other three items. The service was uniquely superior. Being there is like getting a mixture between a home-style lineup and a five star restaurant. The service was so good I might suspect it was because they were about to start filming, but they weren't filming, so I will give them the overall benefit of the doubt. It was the most non-stuffy, well-mannered service I have ever had. The only thing that was a little off is that as one attendant took my plate and escorted me to our table, he called for another attendant who just followed behind, without offering my friend the same courtesy. If nothing else, it's worth going for the experience, and I'm sure it will be easy to justify reasons to keep going back.

This food got puts the SOOOOOOOOOOOUL in soul food. This food is MUTHAFUCKIN DELICIOUS, ORGASMICALLY SCRUMPTIOUS, AND EXTREMELY LIP SMACKING AMAZING. This food is as good as the show on OWN. Miss Robbie proved she's a star in music and cooking. She's actually 1 of my inspirations of me being a culinary chef. This spot is the newest of her restaurants. PS, watch Welcome To Sweetie Pie's Saturday on OWN. (Sorry for the advertisement, just thought Miss Robbie would put me on her commercials.)

Visited this location nearly two weeks ago, while on vacation. First of all, I KNOW soul food, as I was born in the south. I had the catfish with sweet potatoes and mac 'n cheese. The filets were huge, but tasteless - no seasoning. The sides were delicious! My friend ordered fried chicken and a side of green beans, both very good! My issue with Sweetie Pie's is that it is overpriced. Two adults and a child - bill was $60, without wine. For that price, I would expect larger sides (for all paying customers, not a random few) excellent customer service, REAL soul food and NOT cafeteria style. This isn't a destination place, but if you're in the area and are curious, give it a try.

On my list of things to do in St Louis was a visit to Sweetie Pie's Upper Crust. Fresh off the plane August 3, 2012, I was literally starving, having flown all morning. I was able to find the restaurant with help from my GPS. I wasn't impressed with the location at all. The area looks like it is going through an urban renewal project. Anyway, the decor of Upper Crust is nice and bright. I was greeted upon entering the establishment. The servers behind the counter were a little dry. The table service could have been better, but there was some drama with a customer. The food is served cafeteria style, which I thought did not fit with the name. I had the smothered pork steak, green beans, coleslaw, black eyed peas, and peach cobbler. The steak was tender and tasty, green beans just like my momma used to make. The coleslaw slaw was different with sweet pickle relish and the black eyed peas had a touch of sugar. The cornbread was very tasty and not at all dry as some have said; and I am picky about cornbread. I think they use a mixture of white & yellow cornmeal. The peach cobbler, which I had for breakfast the next day, was one of the best I've had. While the food is good, it is not good enough to make a special trip to St Louis. But if you're in the area and want some soul food, stop on by.

I had a chance to finally try Sweetie Pies Upper Crust after a show at the Fox and I have to admit that its the same quality southern soul food that is served at the Mangrove location, however I did expect a little more from this location. For those of you that don't know, the Manchester location is cafeteria style, which "limited" waiter service. Mostly the waiter gets you ice and refills your iced tea (soda is served bottled), the also clean the tables. When I heard that Upper Crust was opening I had heard they would have a full bar, which is true but I was surprised when I walked in to discover that this was also cafeteria style. I was expecting a sit down style with actual menu's and real waiters. The only real plus to this location over the other is the LARGE banquet room, great if you are having a large party. Overall the food is good, and always filling. I just think I expected more than cafateria style from their top tier restaurant.

I visited the Friday after the 4th on my visit from Richmond,Va. The staff was pleasant.. The host's at the door were engaging. Thanks Andre for the picture. I just had fun while we were waiting. Miss Robbie was there and was pleasant and beautiful. Oh Yes and the food. The chicken wings, cabbage, mac and cheese and pear cobbler were fantastic. My boyfriend had baked chicken, green beans and Mac and cheese.. Delish.. Need a little work on the corn bread but that peach cobbler was fantastic too... Of course we had to get boxes to go. When I make it back to the STL I'll make sure I come back to the Upoer Crust. Thanks y'all!!!

I visited the Upper Crust location restaurant on June 13, 2012. I had never seen the show and did not know what to expect. I was there with a friend that is a HUGE fan of the show and wanted to celebrate her birthday by going to the restaurant. The atmosphere was like a buffet style restaurant. After seeing the menu online I was going to try the Catfish; however that was not available that day. With that said, I had the smothered pork chops, mash potatoes, Macaroni and cheese, cornbread, and peach cobbler. The cost was reasonable at $14.00. The pork chop was good but was cold in some spots. The mash potatoes were instant (which was a letdown), the mac & cheese were yummy, and so was the peach cobbler. My corn bread was on the dry side. The highlight of our visit was when we got to meet Ms. Robbie (they were filming season 3), she is very friendly and came over to greet out table. Although, I had never seen the show, I could instantly see why my friends were smitten by Ms. Robbie. She is a pure delight. We also saw her nephew Charles. The staff and their service was EXECELLENT. The atmosphere was like being at home for a Thanksgiving dinner with your family. It did not seem as if we were strangers but extended family members. I would recommend this spot.

WOW, what a difference!!!! Years ago, I went to the Mangrove location and was absolutely disgusted. Shitty food, horrible service, obscenely anti-customer atmosphere (signs, comments, etc.). I swore that I wouldn't go back. That being said, the past few weeks I'd been thinking, "I want to give it another shot," and decided today to check out the Upper Crust location. What a difference!!!! The moment I walked in, I was greeted with genuine hospitality. Everyone I dealt with called me "ma'am," (something you don't see much these days), and was super polite. I'm almost certain that it was Robbie who served me my food...and even SHE was polite! I was stunned. When I cashed out, a polite waiter (Andre, I believe) came and carried my food to a table. This didn't happen when I went to the Grove. In fact, I never once spoke to a waiter/waitress at that location--no drink refills, no "how is everything?", nothing, except when I overheard one of them bitching about me setting my bag in a chair. This time around, I actually had a server! Andre was super polite and repeatedly came to check on me. My food was pretty good. I admit that it wasn't the best (I had the chicken wings this time. Fried perfectly, but NO seasoning!), but it wasn't disgusting like my experience at the Mangrove location years ago, so I give them a thumbs up for that. They STILL haven't fixed the fountain soda machine (other reviews have talked for months about being forced to buy tea, so I assume it's been broke for a while), and I, too, had to give in to the $2.25/btl tea in the cooler. After drinking it, I'm pretty sure I now have diabetes. Yikes. One bottle has a half cup of sugar; 40 grams/serving, or nearly 120 grams a bottle. I gave the Sweetie Pies brand another chance, and I am happy to say that I left impressed. I still will never go back to the Grove location, and the food honestly wasn't the best, but they at least left a GREAT impression with regards to customer service and hospitality. I might come back.

Definitely did not expect to be disappointed when I came here, but I was. I've watched this restaurant on TV and thought that I would experience some serious down home flavors. Most of the food was either over seasoned and undercooked or bland and over cooked...I hope they improve.

I love supporting black owned businesses so friend suggested I try Sweetie Pies. Food was good and I like that it wasn't heavily salted. I had fried pork chop with rice, green beans and mac&cheese. No complaints. I did have to wait quite awhile for pork chop though. You don't sit down and order. Instead you go through line and pick your entree and sides. Unfortunately the ladies behind the counter appear to be in NO hurry to fulfill orders. Oh...they've desserts but instead of apple cobbler they have pear cobbler. Pear! I was not happy. Also no refills on fountain sodas...not 1! I feel they need to offer 1 refill. In conclusion: food tasty, service: tacky.

I was at Sweetie Pie's Upper Crust a couple of weeks back. I too was excited like most. There was no line or wait. Atmosphere nice, staff pleasant. Food appearance off the chain. I wanted to sample it all. But settled for chicken wings, catfish, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and cornbread. I thought the cost was a bit pricey. But it was ok, I was just ready to dig in. After paying, we were seated. Well like I said presentation was nice. After that it was down hill. The items all tasted the same. It was like someone poured an entire box of Morton salt all over the food. Could not even finish my dinner. Not to mention the cornbread was stale and hard as a brick. So very disappointed. Clearly Miss Robbie was no where around. She would have been going off. I should have gotten a refund. Wonder if it's to late. I saved my receipt.

First time at this location and it was great! Only waited in line for maybe 30 minutes. The place is really nice we saw Ms. Robbie in the back doing what she does best working! We also saw her sister and she was Super Nice. Her grandson Andre was our server he is super sweet and was helpful. The food was great me and my family tried a little of everything and it was delicious ! It was worth the 3 HOUR drive. I'll be back next year!

Coming in to St. Louis for a work trip and we wanted to find something a little different and convenient. Someone suggested Sweetie Pie's. The staff was very nice, friendly, and helpful. I went with the 3 chicken wings, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, collard greens, cornbread, and banana pudding. Pricing was ok, though 3 wings is a little meager. I thought they were well seasoned and pretty good. I also really enjoyed the collard greens and black eyed peas. Possibly the two favorite parts of the meal. The mashed potatoes were fine. I'm not 100% sure they're fresh mashed potatoes. The cornbread was also fine, didn't stand out, but good consistency. I'm not typically one to order desserts, but the banana pudding was good as well. Overall, I would say it was a decent quality meal. I wouldn't necessarily rave about it or push to go back again (at least before knocking other restaurants off my list during my visit.)

This is by far the best soul food I have ever had.. I'm not sure what people are complaining about as far as the quality of the food. The mac and cheese was emaculant, you can tell only real cheese( no cheese product type cheese) is used. The chicken wings are huge! Kind of remind you of Leona's chicken wings in terms of size. I also had the string beans, which were well seasoned but not too salty. The spagetti was a bit soupy , but it had the more than usual fixings of just noodles and meat sauce, it had bell peppers, and italian sausage in it, and was flavorful as well. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the restaurant is cafeteria style. But I guess that is so the customer can see all of their options before selecting their meal. I am assuming the long wait to get your food and get seated is due to this. We went on a Saturday afternoon in early July while in St. Louis for a family reunion, and it was really crowded (wait was more so like an hour and a half), but I will admit that it was well worth it. My mom complained so much and didn't see why we would be waiting this long for food, but when she took her 1st bite, she realized why! I really can't wait to go back. It was worth the visit.

  • e m.

Food is decent. The wait times are ridiculous. You aren't waiting for 2 hours for a free table, you are waiting to order at a cafeteria style counter. For some reason, movement is veeeeery slow. It's already in front of you so I don't get the confusion. You can see the employees walking through the kitchen eating, but one of them caught himself and stepped out of view. A female employee just kept sucking on a rib. After an hour+ in line, it was my turn and....they ran out of chicken. The girl was very openly apologetic and trying to get out more. For a place that has a tv show, they should figure out a better system. Once the novelty wears off, I can't imagine people standing in line that long for a plate of just decent food at double digit prices. I'll skip next time.
